And now for your Black History Moment: Today we salute Doris "Dorie" Miller. Miller was a remarkable figure in American history, known for his bravery during World War II and his role in challenging racial stereotypes in the military. Born in Waco, Texas, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1939, serving as a mess attendant, a position typically assigned to Black sailors at the time. However, Miller's most notable moment came on December 7, 1941, during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As the USS West Virginia was under heavy fire, Miller carried many of his fellow soldiers to safety before manning an anti-aircraft gun and shooting down a Japanese airplane. His bravery earned him the Navy Cross and in 2020 it was announced the Navy would be naming its next aircraft carrier in his honor.
