Black History Moment: Curtis Graves

Image
Today we recognize Curtis Graves. Graves was a civil rights activist and politician. Graves graduated from Texas Southern University in 1963, where he received a degree in administration. Being a victim of segregation, he took part in sit-ins, marches, and aided in the foundation of the Progressive Youth Association (PYA), which played a significant role in the desegregation of Houston, Texas. He was one of the first three African American members since 1896 elected to the Texas House of Representatives, the other two being Barbara Jordan and Jon Lockridge. Graves was a major force in the Civil Rights Movement. During this time, he even worked with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We would like to thank Nikolas Tisdale for this morning's announcement. And this concludes your Black History Moment. You better wake up and pay attention!

Black History Moment: Juneteenth

Image
And now for your Black History Moment Today we recognize Juneteenth. Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. It symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States and is a day of reflection, celebration, and education about African American history and culture.Juneteenth became a state holiday in Texas on January 1, 1980. Texas was the first state to make Juneteenth a holiday. In 2021, President Joe Biden signed legislation that made Juneteenth a federal holiday. And this concludes your Black History Moment. You better wake up and pay attention!
