Black History Moment

And now for your Black History Moment.

Today we recognize Black History Month. Black History Month is an annual observance originating in the United States, where it is also known as African-American History Month.

The celebration began as Negro History Week in 1926. The first celebration of Black History Month took place at Kent State in 1970. And in 1976, President Gerald Ford recognized Black History Month during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial. He urged Americans to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history".

Now Black History Month has received official government recognition not only in the United States, but also in Canada, Ireland, and the United Kingdom.

This year we will bring to you important people and events in the history of African-Americans here in the great state of Texas.

And this concludes your Black History Moment. You better wake up and pay attention!
